A Place to Remember
Last year, I joined the English Summer Camp held by The University System of Taiwan in Zhang-Yi High School, Ning-Xia, China. I volunteered to teach English in the camp. For me, it has been the best summer memories I ever had; therefore, I decided to be one of the overseas volunteers again this year.
From July 1st to 6th, we had a training in National Central University, including classes for designing a topic-based 4-hour English course in the morning and planning outdoor and indoor extracurricular activities in the afternoon during the camp. After the training and a week of preparation, we started up our trip to Zhang Yi on July 13th. I couldn’t believe that I was on my way back to the place where I miss so much until I arrived at that little rural village again after a year. Everything for me seemed so familiar. Thousands of stars and even the milk way were clearly visible in the dark sky at night since there weren’t much light in that little village. The camp started on July 15th and ended on July 22nd. The theme for the camp is Traveling Around the World. Twenty of us were divided into ten pairs and each pair introduced a country to one class each morning. My teaching partner and I were in charge of introducing The United States of America. Since students there didn’t have many opportunities to speak English and even communicate with each other in English, I focused on listening and speaking during my English course. I told every student that it was fine if they couldn’t pronounce the words or even read through a sentence fluently. Just read it out loud. “If you all were as good as I am, you don’t have to be sitting here learning English, right?” I said.
In the morning, we were teachers. In the afternoon, we became the students’ big sisters and big brothers, leading them playing outdoor sports and indoor activities. In the evening, after dinner, it was counseling time in each class. We became their friends. At first, students were too shy to speak to us. I opened their heart by sharing my own story and live experiences. Gradually, they were willing to share their story with me, about family, school, learning and most importantly, their dreams. Most of them wanted to get out of this poor little rural village and go to college. They dreamed to make a difference and do something for their home town. However, most of them couldn’t complete high school education because they would be forced to work in order to earn more money for their poor family. Their situation reminded me of how lucky I am and how grateful I should be. I felt regrets for them and wanted to do something for them, but there wasn’t much I can do. All I could do was to encourage them to keep having education. “Knowledge is power. Fight for any chance to keep on studying and learning. That might not be the only way to succeed, but the most effective one.” While I was saying this, at the same time, I was actually reminding myself to always remember my dream, and that if I want to do something for this world, I need to make myself stronger by studying further and further.
Farewell has always been the hardest part when people meet and have a good time, and we were no exception. On the day we left, the students were all in tears, so did we. Last year, I promised my students that I would come back if there’s any chance, and I kept the promise by coming back this year. For my students this year, I believe that I came here to bring them happiness and that there will be a possibility for us to see each other again in the future. We might not know when and where, but there will always be a hope to see each other again. At least, we all know that there is a friend on the other side of the world thinking of them and supporting them in spirit.
From the students and the environment they are living in, I saw how simple human beings’ lives can be. I was impressed by how considerate they are because of their environment and how pure dreams and people’s heart can be. Being friends with those students made me realize the wide definition of love. And this volunteer trip told me how to share love with people in this world.
