Atlanta Hawks

Boris
Suns won 125-90

Boris
Kevin Durant, u r the MAN!!!!

damn it

Suns blow away Hawks

A year ago Tuesday, Phoenix's franchise-record 17-game winning streak had just ended.

All the Suns did Tuesday night was beat another East weakling for a modest three-game winning streak. So why do they feel just as good as a year ago?

Phoenix's 125-92 drubbing of Atlanta at US Airways Center was more than just the Suns' biggest blowout of the season. It was more than a win that tied the Suns with New Orleans for the No. 1 spot in the West. It was a game in which all the defense, consistency and chemistry they have sought came together.

Measuring by shooting percentage, the Suns had their best offensive (64.2 percent) and defensive (34.3 percent) performances of the season. Measuring by intangibles, it was some of the best teamwork, hustle and enjoyment that Phoenix has exhibited this season.

"I feel like we're having more fun, playing better, playing more consistently," said Suns guard Steve Nash, who got to sit out the fourth quarter with Amaré Stoudemire and Shawn Marion. "We're problem-solving better on the fly, and our chemistry is improving."

What a difference an All-NBA center makes. Stoudemire did not play in the Nov. 7 loss at Atlanta, where the Hawks looked more athletic with a switching, long defense.

On Tuesday, Stoudemire had 22 points in the first half on 9-of-10 shooting but stood out more for a locked-in defensive effort that unraveled Atlanta early. The Hawks missed 27 of their first 32 shots.

"That's all I want to talk about now is defense," Stoudemire said.

Amen, said the choir of Suns fans. The Suns defense that had held opponents to 33.3 percent fourth-quarter shooting in the previous five games did not need to step it up late Tuesday, because it put the clamps on Atlanta from the tipoff. After helping Chicago miss 13 of its first 14 shots Sunday, the Suns held Atlanta to fewer first-half points (33) than any opponent had posted in a half this season.

"Right from the beginning, our defense was good and kind of took their heart away," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said.

"Start to finish, this was probably our best effort defensively."

It was some of the better teamwork and hustle of the season for the Suns, who got to tease Atlanta about the 2005 trade, with ex-Suns player Joe Johnson shooting 3 of 14 from the field and Boris Diaw, who started for Grant Hill, recording 16 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.

Hill, who returned after missing a game because of back spasms, came off the bench and scored 16 points in 21 minutes.

The Suns have had higher-scoring games this season, but this was a non-stop highlight reel that included a club record-tying eight blocks in the first quarter and multiple unselfish effort plays.

Marcus Banks went into the sideline table to save a ball to Stoudemire, who was breaking away. Hill tipped his own miss to keep the ball inbounds, prompting Stoudemire to save it to Hill, who fed him for a baseline drive. Stoudemire had just done the same for Marion when he rebounded a Marion miss and fed it back to him for a baseline jam.

"Sometimes, when you've got a big opponent like San Antonio (on Thursday), you overlook Atlanta because you're so looking forward to that big game," Hill said.

"We dispelled that. We took it to them."

Diaw excelling in starter role

Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said it shouldn't be that way. Guard Steve Nash can't understand why it is that way. But it has been forward Boris Diaw's way to be more productive in starts, and the Suns are going to keep going that way.

Forward Grant Hill is well enough to return to starting, as indicated by his 16 points in 21 minutes Tuesday. But against San Antonio tonight, D'Antoni wants to take at least one more look at starting Diaw, who is shooting 49.2 percent and averaging 12 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.3 assists in 12 starts.

"We're just doing what we think is best," D'Antoni said. "I think each player will go along with it. Whatever is good for the Suns is good for these players and that's why we have great guys. They don't care. The main thing is trying to figure out what is the best way to go. We have time to look at that and experiment with it."

Flipping Diaw's and Hill's roles is not a huge makeover. The two switch the five minutes they play in each half's first 10 minutes and then revert to their usual roles.

Hill has come off the bench for seven NBA games but it's a role he played at Duke. After an ankle injury, Hill returned as a sixth man for the 1992 championship season.

"Hopefully, I can do it again with the same result," Hill said.

Like any other player, Hill would rather start but he is embracing the reserve role.

"I'm fine," Hill said. "Whatever we have to do to try to win a championship. I feel like I can be effective both ways.

"Ultimately, it's what's best for the team. It's about trying to win.

"I'll get my time. I'd rather win and come off the bench than start and not win, if we've got a chance to win and win big and win a championship. For whatever reason, (Diaw) does play better when he starts so let's keep it going."

Diaw said there is not much difference to starting, except that he is warmed up and that Nash and Amaré Stoudemire command defensive attention.

"It doesn't matter," Diaw said. "It's the same thing. No real difference.

"Different teams sometimes like that. Chicago likes Ben Gordon coming off the bench. The Spurs like Manu Ginobili coming off the bench."
